Have you heard of Rhodiola?
Rhodiola: Nature's Stress Relieving and Energy Boosting Adaptogenic Herb.
If you're feeling overwhelmed and stressed by the speed of life these days, Rhodiola (r. rosea) may be able to help. It might also be the energy boost you've been looking for. This amazing little plant is an adaptogenic herb.
So what is an Adaptogen?
Adaptogens are active ingredients in certain plants and mushrooms that may help your body to adapt (see where we’re going) to stress, anxiety and fatigue.
While there are many species of Rhodiola, we are interested in r.Rosea. It is one of three adaptogenic herbs (the other two being Siberian Ginseng and Schisandra) that have been studied by science for their adaptogenic properties.
While it has been sought after for over a millennia by everyone from vikings to roman legionnaires to treat fatigue, more recently, it has gained popularity as a natural remedy for "burn out". Starting around WW2, scientists worked with the plant to isolate the adaptogenic properties that would improve the stamina and resilience of their soldiers and pilots. It is an herb that grows in cold regions of the world, including the Arctic, Europe, Asia and right here in Canada. It's also known as the "golden root" or "arctic root." The plant has yellow flowers and a unique fragrance and “rosy” taste.
How does Rhodiola work?
Among other things, Rhodiola contains compounds that help the body adapt to stress. These compounds balance the stress hormone cortisol and reduce the stress response in the body. The herb also increases the production of serotonin and dopamine, which are neurotransmitters that regulate mood.
It has a decidedly rosy flavour (hence the name) which may not appeal to everyone but we believe the benefits far outweigh any taste aversion.
