Tom Thomson (1877-1917)
The emergence of Tom Thomson’s distinctive nature painting style mirrors his path in life. He began as a letterist doing precise, constrained work, but developed into a pioneer of bold outdoor art. Canada’s Group of 7 painting movement officially began upon the untimely death of Thomson, which spurred his artist friends to pursue his vision. Thomson’s most famous works colourfully capture vistas in Ontario’s Algonquin Park. If you live on the shores of Georgian Bay you can visit his memorial in a peaceful cemetery just outside Owen Sound.
